The Market
The growing concern over the environment and the role played by pollutants, especially nitrogen oxides (NOx), has resulted in the adoption of very stringent regulation for controlling these emissions.
NOx is a major air pollutant that contributes to smog, asthma, respiratory and heart diseases. It is a byproduct of high combustion temperatures during the ignition of carbon-based fuels such as diesel, coal, wood by-products, etc.
For years, Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) and Selective Non-Catalytic (SNCR) systems have been successful methods to reduce NOx from stationary power sources like coal-fired utility plants and industrial diesel power gen-sets.
Both SCR and SNCR systems must use a nitrogen reducing reagent like anhydrous ammonia gas, aqua ammonia solutions or high purity urea activate the NOx reduction reaction. Injected into exhaust or flue gas at specific temperatures, a chemical reaction ensues that breaks down oxides of nitrogen to atmospheric nitrogen and oxygen. Of these reagents, high purity urea solutions are, by far, the safest and easiest to handle. In comparison, ammonia is a high regulated, hazardous material now on the Department of Homeland Security watch list as a chemical of interest to terrorists. Learn More.
